How should CETRAXAL be used correctly for acute outer ear infection?
CETRAXAL 2 mg/mL is an ear-drop solution supplied in single-dose containers. It contains ciprofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic.
It is indicated for acute bacterial otitis externa in adults and children aged 1 year and older when the eardrum is not damaged and the infection is caused by microorganisms susceptible to ciprofloxacin.
CETRAXAL is a prescription antibiotic. Use it exactly as instructed by the doctor. It is intended only for use in the ear and must not be swallowed, injected, inhaled or applied to the eye. Do not stop the prescribed course early simply because symptoms improve.

What is CETRAXAL used for?
CETRAXAL is used to treat acute bacterial inflammation of the external ear canal caused by organisms susceptible to ciprofloxacin. Antibiotics do not treat viral infections and the medicine should not be used without appropriate medical assessment.
Dosage
The recommended dose for adults and children aged 1 year and older is the contents of one single-dose container into the affected ear twice daily for 7 days.
How to administer the medicine
- Warm the single-dose container in your hand for several minutes.
- Lie down or tilt the head with the affected ear facing upwards.
- Instil the full contents of one single-dose container.
- Remain in this position for approximately 5 minutes.
- Discard the container after use and do not save it for another dose.
Who should not use CETRAXAL?
Do not use it in patients allergic to ciprofloxacin, other quinolones or any ingredient of the medicine. Particular caution and medical assessment are required in known or suspected perforation of the eardrum.
Warnings and precautions
Contact the doctor if symptoms do not resolve after one week. As with other antibiotics, microorganisms that are not susceptible to ciprofloxacin may sometimes cause an additional infection.
Do not reuse antibiotic left over from an earlier treatment and do not share it with another person.
Stop treatment and seek medical advice immediately if hives, a significant rash, sudden swelling of the face, throat or eyelids, breathing difficulty or another sign of serious hypersensitivity occurs.
Other medicines
Tell the doctor or pharmacist about medicines being used. Concomitant administration with other preparations for the ear is not recommended.
Pregnancy and breast-feeding
If you are pregnant, breast-feeding or planning pregnancy, ask the doctor for advice. According to the official patient leaflet, CETRAXAL may be used during pregnancy and breast-feeding.
Driving and using machines
CETRAXAL does not affect the ability to drive or operate machinery.
Possible side effects
As with all medicines, side effects may occur. Local ear symptoms, itching, tinnitus, dizziness, headache or reactions at the application site can occur. A serious hypersensitivity reaction requires discontinuation and urgent medical assessment.
Missed dose
Do not use a double dose. Continue treatment according to the prescribed schedule.
Overdose
If more medicine than prescribed has been used or there is uncertainty about administration, contact a doctor or pharmacist.
Warm the single-dose container in your hand before administration. Remain with the affected ear facing upwards for approximately 5 minutes after use. Do not stop the antibiotic simply because pain improves and do not reuse medicine left from an earlier course.

Composition
One millilitre contains 2 mg ciprofloxacin as ciprofloxacin hydrochloride. One 0.25 mL single-dose container provides the equivalent of 0.50 mg ciprofloxacin.
Other ingredients include povidone K90F, glycerol, purified water, sodium hydroxide and lactic acid.

Storage
