Precautions and warnings
- Ask your doctor or pharmacist before use if you are an adult weighing under 50 kg, have liver or kidney disease, Gilbert's syndrome, G6PD deficiency, drink 3 or more alcoholic drinks a day, are malnourished, have an eating disorder or are dehydrated.
- If you have or develop acute viral hepatitis during treatment, tell your doctor – they may stop the treatment.
- Check that other medicines you take (prescription or non-prescription) do not contain paracetamol, especially in children.
- Sodium: 412 mg per tablet, about 20.6% of the maximum recommended daily intake for adults; tell your doctor if you need several tablets a day for a long time, especially on a low-salt diet.
- Sorbitol: 300 mg per tablet (a source of fructose); sodium benzoate (E211): 61 mg per tablet.
- If pain or fever lasts more than 3 days, does not improve or new symptoms appear, stop self-treatment and see a doctor.
Interactions with other medicines, alcohol and food
- Oral anticoagulants: high doses of paracetamol may enhance their effect; your doctor may adjust the anticoagulant dose.
- Flucloxacillin: increased risk of metabolic acidosis, especially with severe kidney impairment, sepsis, malnutrition or chronic alcoholism.
- Laboratory tests: tell your doctor you are using the medicine if uric acid or blood sugar tests are planned.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines you are taking, have recently taken or might take.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, are planning a pregnancy or are breastfeeding, ask your doctor or pharmacist before use. If necessary, the medicine may be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding only under medical supervision, at the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible time. Paracetamol may affect female fertility; the effect is reversible after stopping.
Driving and using machines
According to the leaflet, paracetamol has no or negligible influence on the ability to drive and use machines.
Possible side effects
- Rare: rash or skin redness and allergic reactions such as sudden swelling of the face and neck or sudden weakness with a drop in blood pressure – stop use, contact a doctor and never take paracetamol-containing medicines again.
- Very rare: severe skin reactions; changes in blood tests requiring monitoring – liver function disorder, low white blood cell or platelet count (may show as nosebleeds or bleeding gums).
- Reported, frequency not stated: diarrhoea, abdominal pain, raised liver enzymes and increased or decreased INR values.
Suspected side effects can be reported to your doctor, pharmacist or the Medicines and Medical Devices Agency of Serbia (ALIMS).
Overdose, missed dose and stopping treatment
- Overdose: nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, marked pallor and abdominal pain usually appear within the first 24 hours; delayed severe liver damage may occur. Seek medical help immediately, even without symptoms.
- Missed dose: do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
- Stopping treatment: the medicine is taken only while pain or fever persist.
When to seek medical help immediately?
- sudden swelling of the face or neck, difficulty breathing or sudden weakness with a drop in blood pressure
- rash with blisters or peeling skin
- nosebleeds or bleeding gums, unexplained bruising
- taking more than the recommended dose – even if you feel well
Pharmacist's advice
Always dissolve the effervescent tablet in a full glass of water and drink it immediately – the score line is not for breaking. If you need a lower dose, ask a pharmacist about a suitable form.
Because of the high sodium content (412 mg per tablet), people with high blood pressure or on a low-salt diet should ask a pharmacist for a sodium-free form of paracetamol, especially if they take the medicine for several days.
