Calgel is a gum gel with two active substances: lidocaine (3.3 mg/g), a local anaesthetic that relieves pain, and cetylpyridinium chloride (1 mg/g), a mild antiseptic.
According to the approved leaflet, Calgel relieves teething complaints – it eases pain and discomfort and soothes the gums of infants and young children. It is intended for babies from 5 months of age.
Important warning
- Dispensing status in Serbia: available without a prescription.
- Not recommended for infants younger than 5 months.
- No more than 6 applications in 24 hours, at least 3 hours apart; do not use for longer than 7 days per episode of pain.

What is Calgel used for?
Calgel is used during teething: lidocaine quickly eases pain and discomfort and soothes the gums of infants and young children, while cetylpyridinium chloride has a mild antiseptic effect.
How is it used and dosed?

- Squeeze a pea-sized amount of gel onto a clean fingertip and gently rub it onto the sore area of the gum.
- If needed, application can be repeated after 3 hours; no more than 6 times in 24 hours.
- Stop using the gel once the symptoms settle.
- Do not use for longer than 7 days for each episode of gum pain or discomfort.
- If the baby vomits, spits out or swallows the gel, do not apply more straight away – wait 3 hours.
- The medicine is intended only for application to the lining of the mouth.
Special patient groups
- Infants under 5 months: use is not recommended.
- Children with intolerance to some sugars or hereditary fructose intolerance: the gel contains sorbitol – ask a doctor before use.
- Newborns (up to 4 weeks): benzoic acid in the flavouring may increase jaundice.
Contraindications – when the medicine must not be used
- the child's hypersensitivity (allergy) to lidocaine, cetylpyridinium chloride or any of the excipients
Precautions and warnings
- Do not use together with other medicines containing lidocaine.
- The recommended dose must not be exceeded.
- If symptoms get worse or do not improve after 7 days, or if you are worried that your child is unwell, contact a doctor or pharmacist.
- Excipients: sorbitol (a source of fructose), xylitol (may have a laxative effect), a small amount of ethanol, benzyl alcohol and benzoic acid (may cause mild local irritation) and a castor oil derivative (may cause stomach upset, diarrhoea and skin reactions).
Interactions with other medicines, alcohol and food
According to the leaflet, no interactions with other medicines are known. However, do not use it at the same time as other preparations containing lidocaine.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Calgel is intended for infants and young children to relieve teething complaints, so use during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not relevant.
Driving and using machines
Calgel has no influence on the ability to drive and use machines.
Possible side effects
Stop using the gel and seek medical help immediately if your child develops:
- swelling of the mouth, gums or tongue
- difficulty breathing
- rash, skin inflammation or redness
Suspected side effects can be reported to your doctor, pharmacist or the Medicines and Medical Devices Agency of Serbia (ALIMS).
Overdose, missed dose and stopping treatment
- Overdose: if more gel than recommended has been applied or the child has swallowed a large amount, contact a doctor or emergency service immediately, even if the child seems well; take the pack and leaflet with you. Systemic toxicity of local anaesthetics can affect the nervous system and the heart.
- Missed dose: the gel is used as needed; do not apply a larger amount to make up for a missed application.
- Stopping: stop use once the symptoms settle, and after 7 days at the latest.
When to seek medical help immediately?
- swelling of the mouth, gums, tongue or face
- difficulty breathing
- rash, redness or inflammation of the skin
- the child has swallowed a large amount of gel or more than the recommended amount was applied
Pharmacist's advice
Wash your hands well and apply only a pea-sized amount, exactly where the tooth is coming through. Write down the time of each application – it is easy to lose count, and the 3-hour interval and maximum of 6 applications a day matter because of the lidocaine.
Besides the gel, babies often find gum massage with a clean finger or a chilled (not frozen) teether soothing. If your child gets worse, if the complaints have not settled after 7 days, or if you are not sure they are caused by teething (for example, the child has a temperature or seems unwell), see a paediatrician.

- Excipients: sorbitol 70% solution (E420); xylitol (E967); ethanol 96%; glycerol; hydroxyethylcellulose 5000; polyethylene glycol-40 hydrogenated castor oil; hydroxypolyethoxydodecane; macrogol 300; saccharin sodium; levomenthol; Herbal Flavor flavouring (contains chamomile, benzyl alcohol and benzoic acid (E210)); caramel colour (E150); sodium citrate; citric acid monohydrate; purified water.

Storage
