EPA and DHA contribute to normal heart function.
EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) are unsaturated fatty acids. They belong to the group of omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, n-3 LCPUFA).
Fish, algae and seafood are a source of EPA and DHA in the daily diet. If the diet is poor in these foods, the intake of EPA and DHA can be supplemented with purified and concentrated fish oil from dietary supplements.
Omega-3 fatty acids are collected in the phospholipid bilayer of cell membranes. The cell membranes of some tissues are especially rich in fatty acids (heart muscle, retina, brain).
Omega 3 fatty acids, EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), have a beneficial effect on lipoprotein metabolism, have immunoprotective and cardioprotective effects.
Omega 3 fatty acids lower the value of triglycerides, total and LDL cholesterol, increase the level of HDL-cholesterol, regulate blood pressure.
